- the naval kind
Published on November 29, 2010 By Khardis In PC Gaming

Pirates of the Burning Seas is one of my favourite MMO's... and as of writing this post, it goes free to play. It has the best naval combat I've seen, and a full PvE game with a very strong RvR part. Not going to say that much more about it.

As of writing the servers aren't quite up yet, but still. Let me know if anyone starts out there... I don't have any insanely rich characters that can hand out ships like peanuts, but at least I can offer a friendly face.

I see what you did there....

I don't get it.

I did joke with the thread title - it was too obvious to miss - but the post is serious. Really good game. And for what it's worth, I prefer shooting pirates.

That would be the greatest job ever.

"...Premium content will be available for purchase through the in-game store, Treasure Aisle, or through a Captain’s Club membership, available for US$14.99 per month (plus applicable taxes)..."

it's a trick, get an axe!

LOTRO is like this.  Free Worlds is like this.  WarHammer online is like this.  I think they all want to go to this model. <-download a bunch of stuff you can't finish and hope you like it enough to complete your quests.  WarHammer Online is an awesome balanced game on trial.  After you start playing it's maga-unbalanced.  We are talking 50 levels of difference people fighting you in large numbers unfair.  read, read, read.

Except that it's a game that has been 'pay to play' a long time; what you don't get in the free membership that you did get before is character slots, ship slots, and manufacture slots. The latter part is the only thing that hurt, and that only if you are into crafting, is the manufacture slots. (the crafting system is such that you buy and use factories to do the manufacturing for you; you never pick up a shovel or a sewing needle. You do get some cargo to haul around though.). The new stuff - it sounds like a lot, but it's basically convenience things. For games that went from p2p->f2p, you get a LOT in this one.

.. and most of what is unlocked through the captain's club membership STAYS unlocked, even if you only pay for one month.

However, hard to say what the future holds.... but even at worst, it's much better than a two-week trial.

Still, I'm not here to run ads for the damnthing, just wanted to point out a decent opportunity. Me, I'm off to sail on the sea.

They've got an intersting way of handling a problem with their servers.

Captain's Club vs. Premium Accounts

Posted by Misha  |  11/29/2010  |  Maintenance Notice  |  Discuss

The accounts of some Captains Club members will temporarily act like Premium accounts. We expect this issue to be resolved by Tuesday, November 30th. However, in the meantime, these players

  • Will be charged for society creation.

  • Will be charged for Besieged Tortuga.

  • Do not receive the discount in Treasure Aisle.

  • Do not receive XP, loot, and faction bonuses.

THERE WILL BE NO REIMBURSEMENT if you buy something or perform XP, loot, or faction gaining activities before we fix your account.

Thanks for your patience while we resolve this issue.

What that says is: If you are one of those affected by this, your account will act like it's the wrong type, and you will not get the 10% xp/loot/faction bonus you should have gotten retroactively applied, or the store discount. We hope to fix this by yesterday.

(Optimism, ho!)

Premium accounts are accounts that has been subscribed before, captain's club is current subscriptions, so if you acted on this thread and went there to try the free game, it doesn't apply to you anyway.

For my part I'm having fun there, and have not seen any complaints about that in-game, so it's kind of amusing to see it pop up here.
